Most marketing folks would probably steer you away from sites
like goclick.com and some other relatively inexpensive pay-per-click
marketing sites. In most cases I would agree, but there is one
instance that could allow you to reap benefits from this approach.
If you have a very unique product and want to generate some buzz,
this could prove to be a very good idea. My partners and I have
a very unique product (I wont mention our product here because
I want this article to be published) and a VERY limited marketing
budget. After investigating our options of magazine/newspaper
advertising, online advertising with high traffic industry related
sites, and direct mail we were very discouraged. These marketing
options are extremely expensive for a small start-up. I decided
to look into pay-per-click advertising. I found one
or two sites that were fairly inexpensive for most of our keyword
clicks so I decided to go for it.
I compiled a list of keywords and set up my pay-per-click campaign.
This takes some time and could be a whole different article by
itself. I have seen some very good ones in the SEO section of
ezineartcles.com. We decided to limit our budget to $300.00. We
also decided to start our campaign around a holiday and include
some keywords related to that holiday and our type of product.
This is a very good idea but you will need to begin your marketing
around a holiday that might fit your product better than others.
The pay-per-click program we used allowed us to set
a daily spending limit which helped us to get the most for our
money over a long period of time. It also provided us with very
detailed reports for clicks and keyword clickthroughs. We had
to fine tune our daily limit after reviewing our click reports
daily.
Once we finalized the campaign, we just sat back to see what
would happen. Of course, our hit count increased dramatically
and the number of shopping carts generated increased as well.
Most importantly, our sales started! Fortunately for us, one sale
paid for our marketing efforts.
There were also some results we did not expect. We started receiving
information requests from magazines all over the world. Over 90%
of these requests were a result of editors and journalists searching
for unique holiday gift ideas. We gladly provided each requestor
with loads of information and hi-resolution photos of our products.
Suddenly we were getting FREE advertising in magazines around
the world! As a result of these articles, we have been approached
by potential re-sellers in 5 different countries, and have increased
our sales dramatically.
I know that this method is not the right approach for everyone
but I believe that if you have a unique product this is a VERY
inexpensive way to create interest, generate sales, and possibly
get loads of free advertising. Be aware that you cannot start
your campaign blindly. Take the time to identify your market and
use your keywords appropriately.
Since our campaign started, we have had more than 340,000 hits
to our site. 200,000 of those hits were just in the month of January,
2006! So do your research and get started!
